After years of development, the "Hack/Slash" adaptation has found its director: Marcus Nispel, who helmed last summer's "Conan the Barbarian." The project's seen several directors and writers come and go, but Nispel will hopefully be the one who sticks.
"Hack/Slash," in case you weren't privy to the comics, is the story of Cassie Hack, a woman who's meant to be the embodiment of the girl who survives at the end of every horror movie. (Think Jamie Lee Curtis in "Halloween.") Now a full-fledged badass after surviving so many murder attempts, she hits the country in search of killers in the model of Jason and Freddy Krueger, hoping to put them down for good.
It's an inspired concept that walks the line between camp and violence with exquisite care -- important for a series that eventually has Cassie facing off against the Chucky doll. Nispel's got experience with horror, having done the recent remakes of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Friday the 13th."
THR doesn't list any actresses in discussion for the role of Cassie, but there's one long-running fan campaign hoping to see Allison Scagliotti in the part. Scagliotti's logged experience in genres fantastic ("Warehouse 13") and tweeny ("Drake and Josh"), perfect for "Hack/Slash." Of course, the search for a marketable, believable Cassie will probably last a while, so fans shouldn't get too jacked. But progress is progress!
